Creating a sense of belonging: listening to our students

At our school, we believe that every student deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued. Belonging is not just a feeling, it’s a foundation for growth, learning, and thriving. Over the past term, we’ve taken time to listen carefully to our students’ voices, gathering feedback on what helps them feel connected and supported in our school community.

Their insights have been powerful. Students spoke about the importance of spaces to express themselves at break and lunch times, opportunities to collaborate across year groups, and environments that reflect their identities and interests. They asked for more places to relax, more chances to lead, and more ways to contribute to shaping their school experience.

In response, we’ve begun developing new initiatives and spaces that reflect their feedback. From redesigned outdoor spaces that provide space for camaraderie and spirituality, to student-led clubs, scholarships and student leadership initiatives under our brand new house system, we’re working together to build a school where everyone feels they belong. It’s 27 August 2025 and we’re just finishing our summer renovations based on our student feedback – a week to go, and the students will see the brilliant brand new outdoor spaces!

This work is deeply rooted in our school vision:

“The light in our community helps us to grow, responsibility is the compass that guides us, and excellence is the path we walk to reach a brighter future.”

By nurturing a sense of belonging, we help each student grow in confidence and character. By listening and responding to their voices, we model responsibility and shared leadership. And by creating inclusive, inspiring spaces, we pave the way for excellence—not just in academia, but in relationships, wellbeing, and personal development.

We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken, and even more excited about what’s ahead. Together, we’re building a brighter future… one where every student at William Lovell Church of England Academy knows they are an essential part of our community.
